The monastery was founded by Peter the Great in 1710 on the spot where, according to the legend, Novgorodian Prince Alexander defeated Swedes in 1240. Architectural ensemble of the monastery was designed by Domenico Tresini. The monastery houses the Church of Annunciation, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, theological seminary and two necropolises where outstanding Russian writers, architects and composers were buried. The Holy Trinity Cathedral designed by the Russian architect Starov in classical style was constructed in 1770 - 1780.
